Andrew Palmer is a cabinetmaker in
the traditional image with a quality apprenticeship and a family
background of craftsmen. His great grandfather Donald Campbell was a
coachbuilder and was involved with the designs of the first Glasgow tram
and the design of sledges for the Antarctic expedition in which another
relative, Russell Stenhouse participated. Allwoods, under Andrew's
guidance, has recently restored one of the Glasgow trams (No 1017) to its former
glory.
Examples of Andrew Palmer's work in the style of Charles
Rennie Mackintosh may be seen in the "House for an Art Lover", Bellahouston where
exhibits in the oval Room include Andrew's "Oval Cupboard". Andrew also
helped with the construction of the piano in the music room. The Hida
Museum in Takayama, Japan contains further examples of Andrew's work. In
1998, having built a reputation for the quality of his work and his eye
for design Andrew founded Allwoods

The Lanark
Tram -
This task was a particular
challenge as drawings no longer existed and the framework was well
rotted. Allwoods researched the problem from contemporary evidence
and the available remains. The tram is now operating in the Summerlee
Heritage Park, Coatbirdge |
